When a friend arrested for killing a police officer is found dead in his jail cell, Nick and Mackey believe two murders remain unsolved. Nick and Mackey discover, during the course of a murder investigation, that all is not well inside the police department.

Nick takes on the task of proving a drug suspect innocent. Trouble is, the suspect is an old friend. The gangland execution of Nick's mentor puts the reporters on the trail of a politically ambitious district attorney with mob backing.

Nick and Mackey link an illegal-weapons dealer with bikers involved in the cocaine trade.
