Dennis Weaver is Daniel Ellis Stone, a police detective with sometimes conflicting goals: to be a good writer as well as a good cop. In the opener, Stone's detective skills are tested in a case involving an undercover officer, the underworld and a kidnaping.

Stone and his new partner, a policewoman, disagree over their first case: she thinks its's suicide, he is sure it's homicide.
